In the heart of the city and at the centre of the transformation, sits the Winnipeg Convention Centre, which has been hosting meetings, conventions and tradeshows since 1975. This premier event facility is about to make its own mark on the skyline of Winnipeg with a $180+ million expansion. The Winnipeg Convention Centre will be doubling in size to accommodate large conventions, trade and consumer shows. This multi-purpose facility is within walking distance of many of the city’s new restaurants, hotels and awesome attractions.
Feel the electric energy coming from the MTS Centre, one of the busiest sports and entertainment venues in Canada. It may be a sold-out concert or it could be game night! For the first time since 1996, the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets have returned and become the league’s most exciting franchise selling out 5 years worth of season tickets in under 10 minutes.
There’s a new structure dotting the skyline along the Red River in downtown Winnipeg. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be opening its doors soon and will be a centre of learning attracting people from around the world and leading the global movement against hate and oppression.
The James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is Canada’s newest and greenest airport. This state-of-the-art terminal offers customer-friendly service, a magnificent view of prairie landscapes and skylines, and a taste of famous Winnipeg eateries and shops. It was recently named one of the ten most iconic terminals in the world by Travel Channel.
Assiniboine Park and Assiniboine Park Zoo have been popular gathering places for over 100 years. Changes to the park in the first phase of a multi-development investment include a new family centre with restaurant, playground and expanded Duck Pond. The zoo will soon be opening its signature Journey to Churchill exhibit that will house the most comprehensive polar bear exhibit in the world.
Touchdowns soon will be scored in the south end of the city when the new Investors Group Field opens its gates. Home to the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and University of Manitoba Bisons football teams, this new addition to the sports landscape will also be an attraction for major events and concerts.
Revitalizing downtown is a priority with the development of a new Sports, Hospitality & Entertainment District (SHED). With the MTS Centre and Winnipeg Convention Centre acting as its anchors, SHED promises an 11-block area with new hotels, exciting boutiques, commercial spaces, public plazas and innovative streetscaping.
