Renaming Hall C to Ozhaawashko-Giizhig: Honouring First Peoples & Advancing further in Truth & Reconciliation
The RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg is proud to share that Hall C (formerly known as the City View Room) has been given a new name: Ozhaawashko-Giizhig (pronounced oh-ZAH-wash-koh key-zik), which translates to Blue Sky in Anishinaabemowin.
This meaningful renaming reflects the Centre’s ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and honours the First Peoples of this land. By renaming this space, the Centre takes an important step forward in its reconciliation journey, affirming our team’s dedication to creating a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all who gather here.
In partnership with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), a powerful naming ceremony was held on September 22, to give this name to the space properly. Guided by respected Indigenous Elders Dr. Harry Bone, Philip Paynter, Florence Paynter, Eunice Beardy, and Helpers Ray “Coco” Stevenson and Erica Daniels, the ceremony included smudging, pipe and water ceremonies, songs, teachings, and a high noon feast. Tobacco was offered in the proper way, reflecting respect, balance, and the continuation of traditional ways in a space where many Indigenous communities gather.
The stories and teachings that were shared during the ceremony remind us that spaces such as Ozhaawashko-Giizhig carry deep responsibility. By honouring this name, the Centre roots this room in Anishinaabe language and teachings, affirming identity, sovereignty, and culture.
We are grateful to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs for walking alongside us in this important act of recognition and respect.
